15. Ask yourself...

  • What is the product made of?
  • How is it packaged?
  • Can the packaging be reused or recycled?
  • Do I really need it?

14. Envelopes
By sticking labels over the address you can reuse envelopes. Alternatively, old envelopes can be used as scrap paper to make notes on.

13. Recycling your mobile phone
Millions of mobile phones are sent to landfill each year in the UK. To help reduce this toxic legacy, recycle yours and help fundraise for Friends of the Earth. Send it to 'Freepost, ShP Solutions, Lancaster' (that really is the full address you will need) and mark your envelope 'Friends of the Earth'. We will then get a donation of £3.50 for every working phone received.

12. Repair or adapt
The best environmental choice is to repair, restore or adapt a product you already have. You may need professional help but it could still be cheaper than something new - half of electrical goods left at dumps work or require only very basic repairs.

11. Give away or sell
Charity and nearly new shops, jumble sales and community schemes, like the FReCycle forum on this site, are good places to donate or sell second hand clothes, toys and furniture. It is also well worth shopping at second hand outlets.

10. Buy your pills. lotions and potions from Gaia and return the bottles and jars for refilling!

9. Return your glass milk bottles to Plawhatch Farm - they really need them back for refilling!

8. Refill your egg boxes at Angela's Patisserie...

7. The compost bin offer has been extended - whilst stocks last. Wealden District Council have got 30 Green JOs and 150 compost converters left...

6. Refill your old computer printer cartridges at Cartridge World, Station Approach East Grinstead - when you visit our local cinema!

5. Return unwanted mail and ask for your name to be removed from the mailing list. Register Online here with the Mailing Preference Service for your address details to be removed from mailing lists or E-mail the This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

4. Request your local Ecover cleaning product supplier (Seasons or Bishops) to provide a refill service.

Reusing the bottles is even better than recycling them!

3. Avoid drink cartons made of a paper/polyethylene mix - for example Tetrapacks - as these are not recycled in Wealden.

When buying plastics look out for the following recyclable types: PET (polyethylene terephalate), HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and LDPE (low-density polyethylene).

2. Avoid packaging by:

  • Buying loose fruit and veg at Seasons or Sandys or Plawhatch Farm. If you bring your own basket you don't even need to take a paper bag.
  • Buying fresh meat from local butchers - Millers or Alderman's or Tablehurst Farm.

1. Brita Water Filters

If you use Brita Water Filters, don't just bin them when you're finished, recycle them by simply collecting up 6 and sending them to: Brita Recycling, FREEPOST NAT 17876, Bicester, OX26 4BR.
