NEWS
Press Release
Metal Theft
The
Wealden area is currently experiencing an upsurge in instances of metal theft.
This is becoming a Country-wide problem as the price of metal continues to
rise. All types of metal are vulnerable. Examples of items recently stolen on
Wealden include lead from roofs, copper piping and cabling, aluminium sheets
and beer barrels, and scaffolding poles and equipment. Even scrap copper water
tanks and piping have been stolen from front gardens. Often, building owners
are not aware that lead has been taken from their roofs until it rains, when
substantial damage is caused due to water ingress.
Residents
of Wealden are asked to consider where such items are stored or left. Please
secure, and hide from view, such items wherever possible. Even this sight of an
old copper tank can attract thieves onto your property.
If
anyone sees people acting suspiciously, or stealing metal, they are advised to
note as many details as possible, such as vehicle registration number and type,
and the descriptions of the people in it, and contact the police immediately.
Isfield – Quad Bike Stolen
Sometime
during the afternoon of Wednesday 13th August, someone stole a red
Honda quad bike, valued at £2000, from an outbuilding at Constantina Manor,
Isfield. If anyone has any information as to its whereabouts, they are asked to
contact Uckfield police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1138 of 13/08/08 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
Wealden
police again advise owners of such vehicles to consider how securely they are
stored when not in use. When stolen, these vehicles are difficult to identify,
and therefore make attractive propositions for thieves. A strong lock and chain
may be all that is needed to prevent the loss of a quad bike. Consider fitting
a ‘ground anchor’, which is cemented into the floor. When an item
is chained to a ground anchor it becomes much more difficult to steal. Chains
and ground anchors are available from security shops or motorcycle dealers.
