APPEALS, MESSAGES AND
NEWS
Press Release
Chief Inspector Neil Honnor, Wealden District Commander
As part
of the drive for more local involvement in identifying community safety
priorities, the Safer Wealden Partnership (SWP) and Sussex Police are
increasing the amount of engagement and consultation undertaken in communities.
A key factor from many communities, particularly those from small villages, is
speeding and road safety. This of course is not a new issue, but the focus on
localism enables us to spend more time and resources responding to those
crucial issues.
Because
speeding and road safety is such priority within the communities of Wealden,
the SWP have identified it as one of the 5 priorities in our draft Strategic
Intelligence Assessment (SIA). The SIA will inform our community safety
delivery plan, which will identify what action we have in place to respond to
the priorities. Hopefully you will see that this process, ensures that we are
held to account for local priorities.
We
have been working hard to respond to the road safety agenda. Last year the SWP
set up a new 'Road Safety Focus' group. The response to road safety issues,
cross cuts partners responsibility therefore the group is made up
from representatives from Police, County and district council, Fire and rescue,
amongst others. The groups work is in the preliminary stages currently, but it
will provide a really effective conduit for local people to influence decision
making.
There
are many elements to increasing road safety, such as; educating
road users, road design, enforcement, speed restrictions, advertising, and it
is important that we remain focused with our partners on tackling the issue
through these and measures. However speeding is often cited as the main
contributor to reducing road safety, and it certainly is a significant
contributory factor. But speeding is also highly anti social, particularly in
community areas such as villages housing estates and pedestrian areas. To
tackle this 'community anti social driving', local Neighbourhood Teams have
recently been trained in the specialist role of speed enforcement, a function
previously the reserve of Roads Policing Officers. This allows me to directly
respond to community speeding matters, and a programme of enforcement is
underway. We are also piloting a 'Speed Watch' scheme in the villages of Buxted
and Maresfield, here local people have been trained and the project is under
way. To further supplement the 'Speed Watch' scheme, I am also training my
PCSOs to use the speed detection equipment, this will have the added advantage
of increased visibility and prevention.

Operation Crackdown – Sussex Police needs you!
With
your help Sussex Police are cracking down on abandoned vehicles and anti social
driving. Sussex Police are leading a pioneering partnership which
employs the latest technology to provide an easy to use facility for Sussex
residents to report these vehicles.
It’s
two main objectives are to reduce the amount of time vehicles remain abandoned
and to target persistent bad drivers before they cause an accident.
Anti
social driving can range from careless driver behaviour to deliberate activity.
It not only affects road safety but also the quality of life in local
communities. Abandoned vehicles left for extended periods of time often inspire
more crime to take place, such as arson, thieves will strip them of their parts
or they are taken and re-abandoned elsewhere. Once what may have been
someone’s pride and joy becomes a blot on the landscape.
If
you see an abandoned vehicle or someone driving in an anti social manner you need
to:
- Pull
over safely at the side of the road or ask a passenger to write down
details
- Note
the vehicle’s make, model, colour and number plate
- When
noting the location, the house numbers and road names to
pinpoint where the incident happened r where you spotted a potential
abandoned vehicle
- Write
a brief description of what you witnessed, while it is still fresh in your
mind
- If
it’s an abandoned vehicle, if possible take a photograph of it
