- taking minutes at quarterly board meetings

The person the Board is looking for will ideally :-

Update on scams that I have been notified of from members:
‘ NOTICE OF BEQUEST

On behalf of the Trustees and Executor of the estate of Late Engr. Luther Schroeder, I once again try to notify you as my earlier letter returned undelivered. I hereby attempt to reach you again by this same email address on the WILL.

I wish to notify you that Late Engr. Luther Schroeder made you a beneficiary to his WILL. He left some funds and estate to you in the codicil and last testament to his WILL.

This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and true. Being a widely travelled man, he must have been in contact with you in the past (through any medium) or simply you were recommended to him by one of his numerous friends abroad. Engr. Luther Schroeder until his death was a member of the Helicopter Society and the Institute of Electronic & Electrical Engineers. He had a very good heart and was a philantropist. His great philanthropy earned him numerous awards during his life time. Late Engr. Luther Schroeder died on the 13th day of December, 2004 at the age of 80 years, and his WILL is now ready for execution.

According to him this money is to support humanitarian activities and to help the poor and the needy in the society. Please if I reach you this time as I am hopeful, endeavor to get back to me as soon as possible to enable me conclude my job.’

I thought it wise to show the whole document including spelling mistakes, as received by the Community Contact member. My advice would be to delete this straight away. I think this stretches the limits of a persons philanthropy towards others. There are some legitimate firms who deal with this type of case, however note that this is not actually addressed to anyone in particular, if it was the real deal it would be addressed to you by name. The email return address is also from a general email provider, e.g. hotmail or yahoo not a company. All of these anomalies suggest this is a scam. Delete it and don’t get drawn in.

Bank email scams:
There have more reports of emails being received by members purporting to be from a bank, e.g. Halifax or Barclays. The email claims to be from the security department, and that they are committed to protecting you, and that an attempt has been made to access your internet banking account. It asks that you click on a link to confirm your internet banking details and if you do not your account will be suspended.

Regarding this email, if you do not conduct business with the ‘bank’ delete the email straight away. If you do have an account with the named bank then go to their main website, do not use the link provided on the email and give them a ring to confirm or deny that there is a problem. That way you have peace of mind and then delete the email. It’s always worth informing the bank that there are emails claiming to come from them doing the rounds.

Bogus call claiming to be from Pipex Internet Service Provider (ISP):
A Community Contact member received a phone call from a male claiming to be from Pipex. The CC member was suspicious as the male caller would give no reason for the phone call but was insistent in requesting personal information from the CC member. Eventually the CC member put the phone down and contacted Pipex directly who stated that they had not tried to make contact. Be aware and do not give out your personal details over the phone.

Third World Clothing Collections
Leaflets are currently being distributed regarding clothing collections. I have received a couple of emails from members about some of these leaflets as they are not from charities and the donated clothes will be sold to the third world country, not given. This is not illegal and the purpose of me wishing to make you aware is simply that you need to read these leaflets carefully and if you don’t like that your clothes will be sold, give them to a local charity where your clothes will be donated.
