Good News
Banks to tackle cheque fraud – from East Sussex Trading Standards
Banks to tackle cheque fraud by introducing a 6 day cheque clearing limit from 30/11/07. Good news that the banks have finally acted to close this abuse of our banking system and something we in East Sussex have been warning about for the last year as we have had several local people targeted by such fraud.

Not fool-proof, but the fraudsters will now have to get the victim to act on the bogus cheque very quickly as the cheque will bounce so promptly.

Visa Security Check Scam
A  member of Community Contact has emailed in to make you all aware of a telephone scam that is out there. The call claims to be from the Security and Fraud Department at Visa. They go onto to ask you about a recent large purchase which has been made on your card, when you say it’s not yours they claim they will re-credit your account with the missing sum, in truth you’ll find that they debit this mystery sum leaving you out of pocket. In order to do this they ask you to confirm the three security numbers on the back of your card. DO NOT DO THIS. These are the numbers that enable you to purchase goods over the Internet. If the call was genuinely from Visa, they would know this and not ask you, they would use your personal information for a security check i.e. full name, postcode, password, date of birth etc.

These fraudsters are canny and lull you into a false sense of security. They achieve this by claiming to be from a fraud department, they don’t ask you many questions and they offer an 0800 number for you call should you wish to speak to them at a later date. Clever. Well outsmart them, call the number on the back of your Visa card, this is legitimate and request that the real Visa confirm or deny the mystery purchase.
