Fuel price rises/registration plate thefts – from Wealden District Police
Following the recent price rises for
fuel, Wealden Police are advising everyone who stores fuel on their
premises to review their security. Such price rises are often linked to
a rise in fuel thefts especially from farmers who keep a stock of
diesel for use in their work. Heavy duty padlocks, additional lighting
and increased surveillance can all assist in preventing such thefts.
In addition, theft of number plates from
ordinary cars also increase, with the plates then being used on
vehicles which are involved in drive off's from garage forecourts. This
type of theft can often be prevented by fixing your number plates with
special screws which cannot easily be undone. These screws are
available free from Uckfield, Crowborough, and Hailsham
Police Stations or come along to
Halfords at the Bellbrook Industrial Estate between 5pm and 8pm on
either Wednesday the 5th or Thursday 6th December 2007, when officers
and Halfords staff will be on hand to assist with supplying and fitting
the screws which only takes a couple of minutes and is totally free.
Insp. Richard Allum stated, "We are asking people to take a moment now
to see if they can increase their security and prevent these offences
occurring."
For further advice on either of these offences please contact the local Crime Prevention Officer Dave Smith at Hailsham
Police Station on 01323 414008.
Rutting season
A member of Community Contact kindly
emailed in to remind all road users about the deer rutting season.
Please can all road users exercise caution, especially in hours of
darkness, by being aware of deer darting out from hedgerows into the
road. These animals can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle, not to
mention the injury to themselves if they are lucky to survive a hit. Be
careful.
I have spoken to the Highways department
and been advised of the following: if you hit an animal on an ‘A’ road,
major trunk road contact the Highways Department on 08457 504030, if
it’s a minor road contact Police on 0845 6070999 and report it this way.
