The Safer Wealden Partnership - Challenge damage Competition
The Safer Wealden Partnership has
introduced a poster competition to the secondary schools in the area.
The competition is called ‘Challenge Damage’ and focuses on challenging
young people to help prevent Vandalism, Graffiti and Arson in the
community.
The students are asked to design a
poster which focuses on vandalism, graffiti or setting fires. The
winning designs will receive a £50 gift token for books, games or music
and certificates will be awarded to the best posters in each school.
The posters will be judged in January by members of the Safer Wealden
Partnership, including a senior Police Officer, Fire Officer and
Council Member.
The winning 6 designs will be made into
posters and flyers, which will be displayed in the areas where the
problems exists. We hope the posters will advertise to young people
that damage in our neighbourhoods is a crime and advertise to the
public ways they can contact us to give information.
Quote from Chief Inspector Neil Honnor:
“Damage cause by vandalism, graffiti
and arson are criminal offences, and cost the community a lot of money,
but there effect is much wider reaching. Seeing damaged property or
graffiti affects peoples feeling of well being, and leads to increasing
the fear of crime. In an area such as Wealden, where the reality of
crime is amongst the lowest in the country, it is important that we
work together to reduce those perceptions. This is where Challenge
Damage comes from. The project aims to raise awareness about the
implications of causing damage, and to encourage young people in their
peer group to help prevent it.”
Research shows that young people do not
appreciate that causing graffiti is a crime and on being asked why they
committed damage, most said ‘because of the buzz’ (BCS). 1/4 of all
crime in Wealden is damage related and 38% of people caught for
committing damage in Wealden are aged 11-15 years. The cost of damage
nationally is £2.1 billion.
If you have any information on who is
responsible for any damage in the Wealden area, please contact PC Kate
Brookman (School Liaison Officer) or PCSO Gareth Hollister (Safer
Schools PCSO) on 0845 60 70 999 or Crimestoppers anonymously ,on 0800
555 111.
Winter Safety Message from East Sussex Fire and Rescue
Now that the weather is turning colder
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service would like to emphasise the
importance of electric blanket fire safety. Electric blankets can be
very dangerous if not used properly and this can be prevented with some
easy to follow steps.
If your electric blanket shows any of
the following signs it should be checked or replaced: any fraying
fabric, scorch marks, exposed elements, creasing, damp patches, if the
tie tapes are damaged or missing, any worn flex, loose connections or
if it has an old safety mark - this is a round symbol incorporating a
"kitemark. All these indications could mean the electric blanket is
over ten years old.
Electric blankets should be replaced
every ten years and if you have to buy a new one it is important to
check that it has the British or European standard safety certification
marks and an overheat protection facility. Electric blankets also need
to be stored properly; they should be rolled but not folded to prevent
damage to the electrical wires.
To ensure electric blankets are used safely:
· Always follow the instructions.
· Never use an electric underblanket as an overblanket or vice versa.
· Tie the electric blanket to the bed or mattress as this could prevent creasing.
· Only
leave an electric blanket switched on all night if it is safe for all
night use and has a thermostatic control. Otherwise make sure it is
switched off and disconnected before you get into bed.
· Do not get blankets wet, if it is wet do not use it, and do not turn it on to dry it.
Of fires caused by electric blankets 99%
result from products that are over ten years old. For further
information on electric blanket safety please contact Steve Wright on
01323 462449.
