APPEALS, MESSAGES AND NEWS
Good News
One in custody for car crime
On Monday 22 October there were several reported incidents of car crime in the Hartfield area. A member of the public called Police, they had a registration number of the vehicle which the suspect had been driving. Police carried out checks on the ownership of the vehicle, once that was established Police called at an address, the suspect was located and arrested. Enquiries are continuing.

Halloween Message – Sussex Police
While Halloween can undoubtedly be a great deal of fun, it can also be a particularly distressing time of year for some of the more vulnerable members of our communities – especially the elderly.

With this in mind, Sussex Police are urging Trick or Treaters not to be a Phantom Menace  – by thinking carefully about which doors they knock on this Halloween. Better still, why not just stay at home and have a Halloween themed party with your friends and neighbours?!

For those members of the community who feel that they don’t want to be disturbed by anyone knocking on their door, Sussex Police, in conjunction with the Hastings Observer, have produced a flyer for you to cut out and place in your window, preferably near to your front door. Extra copies of the flyer can be downloaded from the Sussex Police website - http://www.sussex.police.uk/operations/downloads/
halloween_poster.pdf
. or obtained at any police station front office.

Scams currently doing the rounds – from Trading Standards
Postal Scam email message
http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/pdfs_news/PostalScam2007.pdf
Please follow the above link for full advice should you receive this email.  NB.  "Phone Pay Plus" is the new name for ICSTIS who regulate phone paid services.

Tax Rebate scam emails
A BSN member has recently received an email purporting to be from the Treasury notifying them of a tax rebate and asking them to follow a link.

To view very similar examples of this email and see other scams of this nature, please visit: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/fraud-attempts.htm

General Warning
A BSN member has sent on to me a couple of emails which are trying to procure goods from them by email, for credit card payment.  The emails did look sufficiently concerning, and I would encourage BSN members who accept email orders to verify the source to ensure it is a genuine order.  If the email looks suspicious, you should report it to the relevant service provider for them to investigate (e.g. if the sender has a Yahoo email address, you would need to send it to Yahoo)

Also, emails purporting to be from Ebay and banks continue to do the rounds.  For the latest on these please see:
