Keep Safe with a Free Home Fire Safety Visit – from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS)
Since January this year three people,
in East Sussex and the City of Brighton and Hove, have sadly lost their
lives in home fires and in that time ESFRS has attended over 500 fire
calls to private homes, each fire causing damage , distress and
sometimes injury. To drive down the risk of harm through fires in the
home ESFRS provide free home fire safety visits and also install smoke
alarms with a 10 year battery life free of charge.
Having smoke alarms, knowing what action
to take to prevent fire and how to respond to a fire should one occur
are the most effective means of keeping you safe.
The simplest way for you to make contact
with ESFRS for this free service is to forward this email to

together with your full name, postal
address and a contact telephone number which can be used to arrange an
appointment with you. If you reply on behalf of another please provide
contact details for both you and that other person. You can also
request a visit by Telephone (0800 177 7069), Mini Com ( 01323 462002)
or fax (01323 462044). Please refer to "Community Contact" in any
replies.
Dealing with Doorstep Callers
Fortunately, the vast majority of
callers at your door will be genuine. It is the small minority that we
need to be aware of, and need to be on our guards against.
How do we know if the caller at door is
genuine? Well, opening comments such as “I’m from the Water Board,
there’s a leak next door / up the road, and we need to check your water”
Or “ I’m working on next door’s fence, give me £200, and I’ll fix yours”
Or “Do you have any gardening work I can do?”…….should all ring warning bells.
Beating the bogus caller can be quite simple….Remember..
“STOP” Is anyone expected? Make sure the back door is locked.
“CHAIN” Put the door chain on BEFORE opening the door.
“CHECK” Ask for identification, if they have none, do not let them in.
Remember also, many of these callers
will target more elderly folk, who they hope they will be able to trick
more easily. For somebody who is partially sighted or blind, and could
not check an identity card, try to have a neighbour that you could call
on to help. It is your home and you should not let anybody into your
home unless you are satisfied you know who they are. A door chain can
be relatively cheap to fit, and could save a lot of inconvenience.
Doorstep Caller cards are available from
your local police station. Placed at the front door, the card can act
as a deterrent to unwanted callers, but can also help remind you to use
the door chain.
Car Crime Prevention Advice – a reminder
Remove all personal items and take them
with you. If you have a Sat. Nav. mount/holder, remove this also but
clean off any marks left. These marks betray that your vehicle has a
Sat. Nav, and is a temptation to thieves who break in simply to search
your vehicle for the elusive Sat. Nav.
Where possible if you do not have the
luxury of off road parking or a garage, park your vehicle near a lit
area nearby so you can see your vehicle. This also means a potential
thief can see there is nothing in there, also leave your glove box open
to show it is empty.
If you have this facility on your wing mirrors, push them in, this will help stop them from being knocked off
If you're parking away from home the
British Parking Association (BPA) gives car parks across the UK an
award if they achieve a police standard of safety and security. Look
out for the ParkMark™ logo, which indicates that a car park has met the
required standard.
If you can't find an accredited car park
then try and find one that's well supervised with restricted entry and
exit points and CCTV cameras. If possible reverse in to the parking
space so that you can get away quickly in an emergency and ideally
choose a place that's close to the exit and away from pillars. If you
can't find any car park then park somewhere that's busy and well lit.
Make sure all your doors are locked,
windows, including the sun roof are secure when you leave your vehicle.
If you have an alarm, ‘crook lock’ (they fit over your steering wheel
and are secured under the brake pedal) use them. They deter thieves who
wish to steal the vehicle.
Remember don’t leave items AT ALL in
your vehicle. Invest the time to employ these methods. Help yourself to
protect yourself against vehicle crime.
