Summer drink and drug driving campaign
Car keys and glass of alcohol. Sussex
Police is taking part in a national summer Drink and Drug Driving
Campaign to target irresponsible and dangerous drivers
The annual campaign, which started
yesterday ( July 30) targets those people who think that drinking or
taking drugs and then getting behind the wheel of a car is acceptable.
The aim is to drive down casualties on our roads and bring offenders to
justice.
The targeted campaign is focused on the
fact that during the summer months people are out more in the afternoon
and evenings enjoying themselves and often using their vehicles and the
temptation to drink and drive is therefore greater.

The Safer Wealden
Partnership warns the community of Wealden to be extra careful to
safeguard their tools when storing them in work vehicles
During recent months there has been a
spate of overnight thefts from trade vans, where high power tools, of
all types, have been the target.
Sussex Police as a member of the Safer
Wealden Partnership urge all owners of commercial vehicles to be extra
vigilant about where they are parking their vehicles. Park the vehicle
where there is good lighting and preferably on a private driveway where
there might be automatic security lighting. Vans wherever possible
should be parked off road and optimally backed up to a wall or garage
so that access cannot be gained through the rear doors. All tools
should be removed from the vehicles and stored somewhere securely and
nothing should be left on show.
Given the value of the tools often left
in a vehicle overnight, the security offered by the manufacturers
locking system is not always enough, and there are better quality
locking systems available on the market.
We recommend that valuables should be
removed from vehicles overnight but we realise that this its not always
practical to do, so the vehicle itself must be made less attractive to
a would be thief. An inner cage of weld mesh, type material, will
provide good protection inside the van, whilst an alarm system will
provide an audible deterrent.
More Scams
I have been made aware by lots of our
members that there are lots of scams doing the rounds again. The scams
that have come to notice are about a job resume, banks requesting
details, IP address problems and offering wonderful free prizes in
return for the postage and packaging fee.
Job Resume –
essentially this is received in the form of an email from an
international company who appear to be wanting to avoid paying large
sums in international transfer tax. It talks about the differences paid
in taxes in different countries and states that it is cheaper to have
an individuals name to act as a representative. In return for acting as
an agent you will receive 10% of the profit made by the company!!!! NO,
these scams are a form of money laundering. If you sign up as an agent
you may find yourself dealing with stolen goods and dirty money and
possibly a jail term, all for something that looked like a great idea
at the time.
For full information and an example of this scam click on: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/money-tranfer-job-scams.shtml
Bank/Building Society emails –
these generally are asking for confirmation of account numbers and
personal details. Do not respond to the email, delete it. Contact your
bank and advise them of this scam. This is a phishing scam, your
details may be used to commit crime.
For full information and advice of phishing scams click on: http://www.sussex.police.uk/community_safety/fraud_pages.asp?id=5
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/pharming.html
Bad IP (Internet Provider) Address –
this is received via email. It states that you have a bad IP address,
normally dressed up as being from the ‘Abuse Team’. Do not do as the
email says and click on ‘the patch’ it could lead to all kinds of
problems. Delete it and contact your Internet Provider.

Wonderful free prizes in return for the postage and packaging fee –
this will probably come through your letterbox in the form of junk
mail. All you need to do get a brand new Ford Focus, £2000 and a
Spaniel(!) is to pay for the postage costs. Sounds great, until you
send off your money and receive nothing. Although the postage isn’t a
lot, maybe £15, multiply this by the amount of households this has been
sent to, a good proportion will fall for this and send the money in,
that amounts to a lot of money. If it sounds too good to be true, it
usually is.

Beware of Dodgy Tarmaccers – from Trading Standards
The Trading Standards ‘Scambusters’
Team has issued a special urgent warning to households in the Southern
Counties and along the South coast about a gang of prolific tarmaccers
who are ripping off victims for thousands of pounds. Intelligence is
available that shows this gang are currently operational along the
Brighton to Chichester corridor. They cold call on victims, sometimes
falsely claiming to be working for Sussex County Council, and offer to
carry out tarmacing work for reasonable rates. Once the work is
started, the rates increase by up to ten times and consumers have been
intimidated when they refuse to pay.
The Scambusters team are working very
closely with the Police and want any information about these traders.
A spokesman for Scambusters said: “We would warn consumers that they
should never deal with cold calling driveway companies under any
circumstances. If they turn up on your doorstep then please contact
Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.”
On the Beach
As it looks as though Summer has
finally arrived. Be aware that if you intend on going to the beach
remember not to leave your personal items unattended if you are going
to go swimming. If you are with other people ensure that someone stays
behind to look after your things. You don’t want to have a nasty
surprise on your return and finding your possessions have been taken.
At home
With the warmer brings warmer nights.
Refrain from leaving ground floor windows open when you go to bed. If
like me you live on the ground floor, close all other windows and leave
your bedroom window open. For peace of mind I keep my mobile on my
bedside cabinet, should I be awoken to a noise I can easily contact
help. Alternatively you could buy cacti and put these on your window
sill. They wont do any lasting damage to someone if they are pricked by
one but it may alert you to someone’s presence by their reaction. If
not keep all your windows closed and invest in a fan.
