No Cold Calling Zones – From Trading Standards
What are they and why should we have them ?
Quite simply, No Cold Calling Zones (the
Zones) are about local residents or communities having the confidence
to say NO to uninvited salespeople and to warn rogue traders and cold
callers that they are not welcome in an area.
Incidents where people have lost
thousands of pounds to rogue traders are now not unusual and what has
become clear is that legislation has not kept pace. The Zones are an
initiative that helps to provide support to residents and send a clear
message to rogue traders that they are unwelcome and their trading
practices will be investigated if they cold call residents within the
designated area. However, the Zones have no legal status and it would
NOT be illegal for traders to continue to cold call.
A No Cold Calling Zone will be
advertised through signs in the location together with stickers for
members to place in doors/windows. The sticker will read "doorstep
traders - you are not welcome".
An essential part of the scheme is to
educate local residents about how to deal with cold callers and to give
them the confidence to say "NO". Studies have shown how few people
request ID from cold callers and even fewer actually take the time to
check it. Residents will be provided with information packs detailing
basic measures to protect themselves from doorstep crime and improve
their home security.
Residents will be encouraged to report
doorstep sellers. We will try to respond immediately to ensure the
trader is complying with the relevant Trading Standards legislation and
advise the trader they are unwelcome in the Zone, In all cases where a
doorstep trader is identified in the Zone, it will be followed up with
the trader.

Rogue Traders – Don’t employ them
Unfortunately there are still rogue
traders out there who will dupe you into parting with your hard earned
money in return for a shoddy job. As householders most of us have a
sense of pride about where we live and can be attracted to what seems
like a bargain quote for work that needs doing. Often what happens is
the original quote is not what you will pay, the price will escalate
costing you far more. The problem with shoddy work is that there can
often times be no come back if the work isn’t done right and you could
end up paying twice, which defeats the object.
If someone calls at your door offering
to do some gardening, drainpipes, tiling, or a new driveway, to name a
few examples, do some research. A good point of reference is the Buy
With Confidence scheme supported by Trading Standards. If you need work
doing on their website are lists of approved traders. This way you can
be have peace of mind.

Sussex Police to launch child safety initiative
The 'Junior Citizen Handbook' has been
put together in conjunction with the Children's Safety Education
Foundation and aims to help children develop an awareness of everyday
hazards and dangers.
The book covers a wide range of
important topics - including hate crime, personal safety, drug
awareness, road safety and basic first aid. Its colourful design and
lively style makes it both fun and educational at the same time.
The books will be handed out over the
coming year by Sussex police officers and PCSOs when they visit primary
schools. The officers will also be delivering a series of safety talks
and demonstrations to reinforce the life saving messages contained in
the handbook
