Good News
District Based ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)
Wealden District have been operating a
mobile ANPR system on the district for 14 months. The system is
operated by both Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers.
The system utilises the newest technology to identify offenders who
travel around the district. Since the system was first operated in
February 2006, other districts within Sussex Police have purchased the
same technology. Which increases the ability to target those
committing crime in Sussex. As this is a mobile system and extremely
compact it can be moved easily between vehicles and locations, making
it harder for the criminal elements to identify.
During a recent deployment of Wealden
ANPR by Sgt Darren Johnson and his Neighbourhood Policing Team, over
3500 vehicles passed through the system. From this approximately 50
vehicles were stopped and checked. Officers from PS Johnson’s team
issued fixed penalty notices for road traffic offences, recovered one
stolen vehicle and a BMW was seized, as the owner had no insurance.
Authority chairman aims to protect neighbourhood policing
The new chairman of Sussex Police
Authority Lionel Barnard has pledged to protect the advances made in
neighbourhood policing in recent years and to drive forward the Force,
which is now achieving record performance results.

Shed and Outbuilding Burglaries
Sussex Police would like
to remind owners of sheds and outbuildings to consider what security
measures they have in place. Sheds and outbuildings are often used to
store expensive gardening equipment, tools, motorcycles or quad bikes
which are all attractive targets for thieves.
Quote from PCSO Angie
Osborne, “ I would like to urge people to look at their outbuildings
and sheds and consider the possibility of moving expensive equipment to
somewhere more secure. If this is not possible then consider how you
could improve the security of the shed or outbuilding. There are shed
alarms and other such devices available. Dave Smith, Crime Prevention
Officer at Hailsham Police Station is always happy to give advice and
demonstrate what is available and always has a supply available at
really low prices. If you own a quad bike or off-road bike, be
especially careful as these make attractive targets for thieves. Use a
substantial chain at least and lock it something solid. A ‘ground
anchor’ is a really good idea. Some people, if they have a power
supply, use a cordless baby monitor to pick up any noises suggesting
someone trying to break in.
I would also like to
urge owners to mark their property with a post code. This makes items
much less attractive to thieves and makes our job of returning it much
easier if we recover it.”
If you would like more
advice and information or any crime prevention products please call
Dave Smith at Hailsham Police Station on 0845 60 70 999.
Forest Row – Burglary
At approximately 2:51am
on Sunday 8th July, the intruder alarm was activated at CO OP store,
Hartfield Road, Forest Row. On arrival by police the front door had
the bottom pane of glass smashed and the alarm was sounding.
The persons responsible
had entered the store and attempted to break into the cigarette kiosk
located behind the till. They were unsuccessful but caused clear
damage. There is a cupboard under the cigarette display which was left
open and it was clear that items had been taken. It is believed the
persons responsible made off in a vehicle as there were tyre marks and
footprints indicating this in the parking bays outside. The items
stolen were tobacco products.
Police are appealing for
witnesses and ask anyone with any information to contact PC Phil Tribe
at Crowborough Police Station on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 351 of
the 8th July. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously
on 0800 555111.

Rogue Traders – Don’t employ them
Unfortunately there are still rogue
traders out there who will dupe you into parting with your hard earned
money in return for a shoddy job. As householders most of us have a
sense of pride about where we live and can be attracted to what seems
like a bargain quote for work that needs doing. Often what happens is
the original quote is not what you will pay, the price will escalate
costing you far more. The problem with shoddy work is that there can
often times be no come back if the work isn’t done right and you could
end up paying twice, which defeats the object.
If someone calls at your door offering
to do some gardening, drainpipes, tiling, or a new driveway, to name a
few examples, do some research. A good point of reference is the Buy
With Confidence scheme supported by Trading Standards. If you need work
doing on their website are lists of approved traders. This way you can
be have peace of mind.
