  • NigelS : Thanks to the "Arabian Nights" team. I always reckon that our village panto is funnier and more closely in the tradition of panto than many professional productions!
  • webmaster : "Does anyone there remember the old Crocodile pub? It was run in the 60's by my friends Helen and Wally Hyatt. Any info gratefully received especially photos. Thanks". Posted on behalf of Don Prescott, «email»

FR - One Living Planet Print E-mail
Posted by Alan Potter

A few weeks back I went along to a regional event about One Planet Living Community event in Lingfield. Of the 80 or so attendees there was a cohort of 6 Forest Row residents - representatives of the Parish Council, District Council, Fair Trade Village and transition town initiatives.  This once again demonstrated the active interest of the village - nothing to do with the locally sourced free lunch - great to see some Plawhatch Farm Yoghourt made the table!

So what is One Planet Living I hear you cry?   It is based about the idea that there is a fixed amount of land and productive ocean available in world to feed, clothe and shelter each person - not to mention the animals. This is called our ecological footprint. Someone somewhere has calculated that if everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK we'd need three planets to support us. Obviously this is not a sustainable state of affairs. The objective of the One Planet Living initiative (OPL shorthand) is to identify actions we can all undertake to reduce our footprint and try to bring it back to reflect the limits of our single amazing  planet - Earth.
Go to http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ to measure your footprint.

We all found the presentations of about OPL quite inspiring and the Parish Council is hoping to entice the presenter to come down to Forest Row to do a talk.

OPL is founded upon 10 principles/ goals which are used to guide the development of Community Sustainability Action Plans: Zero Carbon, Zero Waste, Sustainable Transport, Sourcing Local Sustainable Materials and Food, Sustainable Water, Natural Habitats and Wildlife, Culture & Heritage, Equity & Fair Trade and Health & Happiness.

We are extremely well placed to develop an action plan that could help us move towards being an OPL Community. I attach my initial thoughts using the OPL Framework and invite anyone to make additions and contributions on this
