The digital TV switch-over is only three years away. I am interested to here how other residents are preparing/planning for this, either for TV or Radio.

From my experience, here in the Medway valley that is the Hartfield Road, DAB radio is almost unusable, and I gather the FreeView reception is not much better with out a massively beefed up aerial. Given the lack of a cable service to any part of the village, I notice the plethora of satellite dishes sprouting up everywhere for a Sky of FreeSat service, provided a clear line of sight is possible through the trees – not always so easy living on the edge of a forest!

Could we set up an informal survey consisting of a map with villager’s reception experiences for the different platforms (existing analogue services as well as digital)?

Just a thought …

Nigel.

Nigel, Forest row is rubbish for reception, partly as it is in a valley. Freesat is fine if you don't want Sky subscription. DAB only any good with large antenna at ground level of Upper Close or similar. Best advice for radio: get a Wi Fi radio & listen to stations all over the World! Oh, & 3G would be nice for wireless internet services, but some of our less tech-savvy fellow residents are trying to scupper this. Shame... Huh

Thanks for your comments. I too am not to happy with 3G and I will not have Wi-Fi in the house. The wonderful thing about analogue radio is that it offers an in-phase, real-time live, wireless network! Turn on as many receivers as you wish and they will all be in sync, unlike the DAB, FreeView, Satellite or internet signal equipment. Sounds better too!

Digital seems to offer more stuff - but with a lesser quality service.

Well Nigel, with WiFi music streaming, synch is overcome & not an issue. As for radio quality: DAB is normally around 128k MP3, but some stations are higher bit rate. 'Spotify' is excellent 160k OGG format, with an option of 'HiFi' 320k (I think), which sounds WAY better than hissy old FM! re WiFi in the house: as you say, 2012 will see Freeview arrive in Forest Row - do some research into signal strength/frequencies etc. IMHO I believe it will be a lot more powerful signal than home WiFi.....
