PETER HILKEN
presents
THE CHINESE MONKEY STORIES
WEDNESDAY 2ND MAY
FOREST ROW COMMUNITY CENTRE
(opp. Fish 'n' Chip shop) £6/£4
The Monkey Stories can be traced to the 7th Century, but they were
written in a canonical version seven centuries later, and were put into
English by Aurthur Waley in 1942.
Monkey is compounded of Heaven and Earth. He is clown and trickster.
When he achieves immortality he delights in his power to transform himself
into other shapes.
Humility and wisdom are not among his characteristics, and when he
cries to take the throne of The Jade Emperor (The Supreme Ruler in Heaven)
he becomes unstuck...........
Peter Hilken travelled far and wide in Africa, South America, and
Asia with his work for the BritishCouncil. Since retirement he has turned his considerable experience to working with stories.
He is the founder of The Cambridge Storytellers and this is his eagerly
awaited debut at the club.
WE RETURN TO OUR TRADITIONAL FORMAT WITH STORIES, POEMS, SONGS,
RIDDLES FROM THE FLOOR IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE EVENING. SEE YOU THERE, LOVE
FROM MAD AND GEZ
